Albums of 2009: 1 – Yeah Yeah Yeahs – It’s Blitz

31 Dec

Whilst the other records on my list are in no particular order, I would say that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs record is definitely the best.

It is always one of the first records that I mention when talking about my favourite albums of the year and nothing has come along since that has made me forget it. I listen to it constantly and I love it more I hear it.

It’s a shift in sound from previous efforts and it’s one that contains colours and depth that you’d never thought they were capable of.

A truly great record from start to finish.

Wonderful.

Albums of 2009: 3 – Volcano Choir – Unmap

Absolutely beautiful and dreamy. Perfect late at night winter listening.

Albums of 2009: 4 – Arctic Monkeys – Humbug

Challenging, sleazy, moody and dark third record from them northern monkeys. Produced by Josh Homme, you can hear his stamp on all songs on this record. The sounds, the feel, the mood. All of it. Add that touch to Alex Turner’s highly underrated songwriting, superb musicianship and you’ve got a perfect record.

Casual fans may be left confused by it’s lack of ‘hits’ but I think it’s easily the best record they’ve made so far.

Hail the monkeys!

Albums of 2009: 5 – Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest

Genius. That is all.

Albums of 2009: 6 – Wild Beasts – Two Dancers

This one might surprise a few people. It is absolutely brilliant though. Such a great band.

Albums of 2009: 7 – Them Crooked Vultures – Them Crooked Vultures

Firstly, Merry Christmas! What a wonderful day it is. There’s only one album that I can announce on this day and it is of course the debut record from Them Crooked Vultures.

You’d have to have been living under a rock for the past four months or so to not know about this band. Quite simply, a bunch of rock legends have teamed up to make a sleazy blues record in their spare time that a lot of other bands wouldn’t be able to do if they worked overtime.

Another thing that’s exciting about this record for me personally is that Josh, Dave and John are all members of my favourite bands of all time and it was a no brainer in putting this record on my albums of the year list.

The musicianship, songwriting, production, groove and feel to this record is superb and there’s talk of them releasing another record in the near future. I for one can’t wait!
