Rachel Collins

11 Feb

It is common knowledge that 2009 was the year of the woman with new artists such as Florence, La Roux, VV Brown, Speech Debelle and Little Boots taking the pop world by storm. 2010 looks no different with a whole bunch of fantastic ladies causing a great amount of excitement among many bloggers, journalists and radio DJs across the land.

You’ll have read about the likes of Ellie Goulding, Beth Jeans Houghton, Holly Miranda, Ellen & The Escapades, I Blame Coco and Marina and the Diamonds on here before (if you haven’t, go back and check them all out) and I’d like to introduce you to another.

Rachel Collins is a mish-mash of modern female pop stars such as Nash (I mean Kate Nash, not Graham Nash on a cross-dressing weekend) and Lily Allen with a vulnerable and soulful influence from the likes of Regina Spektor and Laura Marling. I think this a perfect mix.

How many others have been influenced by Kate Nash in recent times? And how many have very little to say and end up sounding quirky for quirky’s sake? Not Rachel. In fact, the only real comparison to Kate Nash is vocally. Musically, I can hear a lot of Regina Spektor in her songwriting.

(This is an amateur live video. For better quality music, go to her MySpace page by clicking the link at the bottom)

I like her. You can’t deny that she makes pop music but it’s pop music with a bit of thought and maturity both lyrically and musically. It’s certainly better than rhyming “bitter” with “fitter” innit?
